As a child, one of my favorite spots in the entire world was my local library.​

My mother took me there several times a week and I’d wander the aisles, reading for hours on end.​

They had a section for Japanese books and my mother (also an avid reader) found comfort in her language while allowing me free rein in a place of safety.​

I associated a joyous freedom with that space. No limits existed — I could read whatever interested me and dive into fascinating worlds and lives far beyond my neighborhood.​

I met other children during enchanting story time hours and the smiling librarians became trusted figures who always knew exactly what books to share with me.​

The emotional connection I formed with that quiet, magical space of imaginative exploration and belonging deeply influenced me and has remained with me to this day.​

Not only am I a voracious reader and author, but I’m also a huge advocate for literacy education, the importance of public libraries, and the necessity of 3rd spaces for community.​
